Water Cooler Dispenser Buyer’s Guide

It can be difficult to choose the right water dispenser for your home, office or business. We have created the following buyer’s guide so that you can learn all about water coolers and make informed decisions.

Water Coolers & Dispensers

A water cooler at work or at home can save you money and allow you to enjoy clean water at the right temperature all day.

A water cooler dispenser has many benefits:

Convenience

A water dispenser allows you to instantly access clean, filtered water for your hot or cold drinks. You don’t need to go to the supermarket just to buy a few water bottles. Water coolers allow you to have clean water at your home or work.

Environmentally Friendly

Bottleless water coolers reduce the need to buy bottled water. This means that you can help the environment by reducing plastic waste and avoiding the purchase of bottled water. Water filter dispensers basically give water the same treatment as bottled water, so you can have a similar taste to bottled water without needing to buy water bottles.

Temperature Options

Many water coolers come with a cold water spout and filtered boiling water options. These can be used for hot drinks. This allows you to use hot water with more freedom than other water filters.

The water dispenser cools the water until it boils after filtering it. This ensures that the water doesn’t damage the filters.

Refill

A water cooler doesn’t have to be refilled every day. This is one of its greatest conveniences. A countertop water dispenser can be connected to your main water supply and used as a water source.

Both top-loading and bottom loading water dispensers are more labor-intensive. They contain large water bottles (around 3 to 5 Gallons) that you will need to remove and refill as needed.

Bottom-loading water dispensers make this easy as the bottle can be placed inside the dispenser without any lifting. Top-loading water coolers will require more strength and precision. You’ll need to flip the bottle upside down and attach it to your dispenser’s cap. Then, slide it into place.

Cost Savings

Owning a water dispenser at home is the best way to save money. You won’t need to purchase bottled water. Water coolers can be more expensive upfront at $150-400, but if you only spend $30-50 each week on water bottles, you will quickly pay back the initial investment.

Water Dispensers

While other appliances, such as a water filter pitcher or kitchen faucet, are technically water dispensers too, we will be covering three types of water dispensers today: countertop, top loading and bottom loading.

Top Loading

Top-loading water dispensers have, as their name implies, an upside-down water container that connects to the cooler from its top. It has a cap and hose attached to it that fits the bottle properly in the cooler once it’s been slid into place.

Bottom-Loading

The bottom-loading water dispensers can take water bottles through an opening in the bottom. The unit’s base allows bottles to be placed upright and connected to the system using a water probe that is inserted into the top of each bottle.

Countertop Water Cooler

Countertop water coolers are placed on the kitchen countertop. They can be connected to a cold water line at the kitchen sink. These coolers are smaller, more compact, and don’t require much storage space. They draw their water directly from your plumbing.

Water dispensers are ideal for those who want access to clean, filtered water without the need to install an expensive whole house filtration system. These water dispensers are a great alternative to traditional methods of getting filtered water, such as a countertop or refrigerator water filter.

What to Consider When Buying a Home Water Dispenser

When choosing a home water dispenser, there are many things to consider.

Capacity

Top-loading and bottom loading home water dispensers can hold water bottles up to 5 gallons. A unit should hold at least a 3 gallon water container. This will decrease the need to refill the bottles during use.

Bottleless water dispensers don’t have a maximum capacity and are connected to the water line at your home.

Easy of Use

You don’t need to know anything about filtration. All you have to do is press the hot/cold water buttons, depending on your preference. Some models require some extra maintenance.

Based on how much water you use and the size of your household, both top- and bottom-loading water dispensers will need to be filled every 2 to 4 working days. A top-loading cooler is not recommended for those with limited mobility. This cooler requires you to lift a large water bottle high up.

Energy Efficiency

Water coolers can be switched on and off at will, so you have hot or cold water available whenever you need it. You don’t need to wait for your water temperature to rise or fall. Look for water coolers that have an Energy Star rating. This means they are energy-conscious and won’t waste any energy.

Your machine might not be used for hot or cold water every day. There are many machines that will allow you to turn off heating in the afternoon, so you can only use the fridge for hot water in the morning. This would reduce energy consumption and help you save money. The cooling function is also available.

Temperature Features

It doesn’t matter if the water dispenser is countertop, top-loading, or bottom-loading, it should have hot and cold temperatures.

The hot should boil, be hot enough to heat up instant food and hot drinks. The temperature of the cold is typically around 50 degrees F, which is 10 degrees below room temperature. However, some water coolers offer a room temperature option.

Safety Features

You should look for a water cooler that features a safety lock to prevent your entire family from using it.

You never know what could happen, and you don’t want to risk your children’s safety by leaving the hot water on while you are away. We’re fortunate that almost all water dispensers we have seen have some kind of hot water locking mechanism, so there are many options.

Material It’s Made From

Some water cooler dispensers come with a plastic exterior. This can make them appear more professional and practical. The most expensive water dispensers come with a stainless steel or chrome exterior. This makes them look more natural in modern kitchens. Although plastic is not as durable as stainless, it should be just as long-lasting as metal.

The stainless steel used in water cooler dispensers’ interior components is common. Although there may be some plastic, most manufacturers use food-grade plastic, which won’t leach chemicals from your water. This is why you should look for the words “food-grade”, BPA-free, or BPS-free in product marketing materials.

Household Size

Consider carefully if you’d be better off spending a little more upfront to get a countertop water dispenser that connects directly to your plumbing if you have a large, thirsty family.

A top-loading or bottom loading water cooler dispenser has one drawback. Both water bottles need to be refilled and replaced as soon as the water runs out. A majority of dispensers can hold 3 to 5 gallons of water. Given that one person consumes 1 gallon of water each day, a family with 4 people will need approximately one full water bottle per day.

Because they would consume less water per day, smaller households wouldn’t need to refill or change their water bottles as often.

Useable Space to Place It

Most water dispensers are space-saving at 10-12inches wide and 10-12inches deep. However, if you have limited floor-to-midwall space, a full-size dispenser (at 35-40 inches high) may not be an option.

Countertop water dispensers can be placed on the kitchen countertop. Most people store their water dispensers inside the kitchen. However, if you have more space in those areas, you can also place them in your study or dining room.

Maintenance

Maintenance is essential, regardless of the type of water dispenser cooler that you purchase. The water cooler will come with specific cleaning instructions. These will include draining the system and then filling it up with a cleaning solution. Finally, scrub the inside of your water cooler to remove any scale or contaminants. You can also remove drip trays from water coolers for easy cleaning in the sink.

Water cooler owners also have to replace or refill their water bottles. These coolers heat or refrigerate water from attached bottles. This maintenance task is dependent on how often you use water and how fast your water bottle runs dry.

Water dispensers equipped with filters need to be changed as recommended by their manufacturer. Water filters are only good for so long. In the case of water dispenser filters they last around 1,500 gallons, or 6 months.

Unclean water can result from not changing the filters, which will devalue the entire point of having one in your machine. This will slow down the water flow and cause your glass to take longer to fill.

Associated Costs

You can buy a water dispenser cooler for nothing and not pay anything (other than the occasional repair). However, it would require you to buy a countertop water dispenser without filters. This would limit your options.

You can expect to pay one or more of the associated costs for a water dispenser.

A top-loading or bottom-loading dispenser without a filter might not be suitable for you. The cost of replacing your 5-liter bottles every 1 to 3 day will quickly add up, and it costs $5 each. The cost of bottled water will not be any different if it is purchased for family members.

You should also be aware of the cost of replacing filters. Water dispenser coolers that filter water have two filters. One is a sediment prefilter, the other is an activated carbon filter.

Water coolers can have universal filter replacement kits that include the activated carbon and sediment-pre filters. They cost between $40-60, depending on which brand. Although it is quite expensive, you will only have to pay it once per 6 months.

Water Dispenser Cleaning and Maintenance

Even self-cleaning water coolers may need to be cleaned from time-to-time. Your system can prevent harmful microbes from building up inside it, so make sure you clean it as often and as frequently as the manufacturer recommends.

Step-by-step instructions on how to clean a water cooler system

To clean your drinking water dispenser, here’s what to do:

Water Hoses

Take out your hoses

You should take your water hoses from your water cooler system. Be careful not to damage them.

Make a white distilled vinegar solution

White distilled vinegar can be used as a natural cleaner due to its high acidity, which makes it capable of lifting difficult-to-reach stains. You can clean your hoses by filling a small bowl with distilled vinegar. To avoid staining your hoses, make sure that the vinegar is not colored.

Your hoses can be added to the solution

Place your hoses in the vinegar solution and make sure they are fully submerged. Leave it to react for 10 minutes.

Re-attach the hoses to your cooler by removing them

After the timer has expired, take your hoses off and run them under the kitchen faucet to remove any vinegar. You can then reattach them to the water dispenser unit and use them as usual.

Sanitizing

Cleanse (sanitizing!) your home

Before you can begin cleaning the water cooler’s interior, you need to find the right solution. You can buy a water cooler cleaning solution online. However, it will not do as good a job as your own products. Combine 15 mls of unscented bleach at 5% with 5 liters warm water. Before you put your bleach in your cooler, make sure it is approved for food contact surfaces.

Get your water cooler ready

Unplug your water gallon dispenser from the power socket to ensure it is ready for cleaning. Also, take out the empty water bottle. You may still have some water in the cooler. This needs to be drained out of the system’s plug (known as the spigot). You can remove the drip tray and baffle, but you should leave them behind for washing in the sink or dishwasher.

Fill the cooler with your cleaning solution

The cleaning solution should be carefully poured into the cooler’s water reservoir. Use a long-handled brush with bristles such as a scrub brush to clean the reservoir’s base and walls. You can clean the reservoir with a soft bristle brush.

Drain the cleaning solution

The cleaning solution should be drained from the spigot and left for 2 minutes to let the solution work its magic. You should not leave the cleaning solution in your machine longer than five minutes to prevent corrosion. The rest of the solution should be poured into a container and emptied into a bucket.

Use bottled or clean water to fill the reservoir

Pour the cleaning solution into the reservoir three times. Each time, run the water through the spigot. After draining all the water from the reservoir, wash the parts you have removed and then add a new water container to the unit.

External Cleaning

Cleanse your home with a cleaning solution

A mild cleaning solution is all you need to clean the cooler’s exterior. You can clean your cooler’s exterior with a mixture of 5 parts water and 1 part dish soap. This will remove dirt or dust from the surfaces.

Use a clean cloth to soak in the cleaning solution. Apply it to your cooler.

To remove stains, turn off your cooler or unplug the unit from the wall. Next, rub the cooler with a damp cloth. Make sure you get to all the corners and crevices, including around water spouts and buttons.

Dry clean your clothes.

Use a paper towel to wipe down the cooler. After you are done, turn your cooler on again or plug it in. Make sure there isn’t any water left on the surfaces.

Additional Cleaning Tips

Regular cleaning is important for the maintenance and operation of your water cooler.

Sanitizing your Water Dispenser: You will need to also sanitize the water dispenser from time-to-time.

Make a solution of 1/2 teaspoon bleach to 1 gallon of water. Then pour the water over the reservoir. Do not let it sit for more than 5 minutes. After you have finished, drain the water.

If there are two taps, Drain them through each other and rinse them immediately with cold water. It is also important to clean the water dispenser regularly.

Cleaning around the Water Cooler: Make sure you disconnect the power supply cord when cleaning around the water cooling unit.

After unplugging the cooler, you can clean it with a small brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

Frequently Asked Question

Are water-gallon dispensers loud?

It all depends on what product you have, but there will be some noise coming from the machine’s refrigerator unit. People prefer to keep water coolers in their kitchen, along with other appliances that can “hum” when they are turned on. It shouldn’t be too loud, but it might be distracting enough to make you uncomfortable.

How fast is water coming out of the spouts at

It all depends on the product. It may take a little longer for water to flow from a water dispenser cooler that has a filter. The water should be able to fill a large glass of water in 10 seconds or less.

Do I need to use branded water in my dispenser?

No. No. Make sure the water bottle you purchase is unbranded and fits in your dispenser.

Where can you buy replacement filters?

You can buy replacement filters online for water dispensers that have filters. These filters are available in independent shops and online marketplaces such as Amazon. There are many off-brand filters available that will fit most water dispensers. Make sure you double-check your purchase and to read reviews from customers to make sure the filter is of good quality.

How long can water dispensers last?

Check the warranty on the water dispenser cooler to determine its lifespan. While most water coolers come with a 5-year warranty you can expect to have your gallon water cooler last for up to 10 years if you take care of it. There may be a small repair that is needed every once in a while, but not major. It’s more difficult to fix electric faults yourself. This is when it might be wise to purchase another system.

Do I need to clean the dispenser before I use it for the first time?

This is a good practice. The manufacturer will instruct you to do it in the user manual. Clean your dispenser before you use it to get rid of any chemicals or contaminants that might have been in the system while it was stored. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning your dispenser or our cleaning tips as described earlier in this guide.

Is there a better way to rent a water cooler than buying one?

It is possible that you have rented water coolers in the past, or are renting one now. Although the monthly fees seem smaller and easier than buying a water cooler, they quickly add up. After a year of renting a water cooler, the rental company has charged you more than it would have cost to buy one. Renting is better than renting.

Are home hot water dispensers safe?

Our water cooler review lists many water coolers that have safety locks to protect your family, especially your children. This guide will help you choose the right water dispenser for your home.

What water dispenser is best for my office?

Because it is smaller, more sleek, and easier to fill, a bottom-loading water cooler dispenser is the best choice for your office.

How can you store bottled water in your home?

It’s best to keep your full water jugs in a cool area. This is because if stored in a warm area, you run the risk of algae and mold build up [9].

Which water dispenser is best for home use?

This is a difficult question to answer because there is no one right answer. The best water dispenser cooler will depend on your space, your family size, and if you have a child lock.

Who makes water coolers that are the best?

There are many brands that offer different dispenser types with different features. Avalon and Whirlpool are reputable water cooler brands. Primo, Brio, and Primo are also good choices.

How to clean a watercooler?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you should be cleaning your cooler every six weeks, or every time you change the bottle [10].

To clean a water cooler, you will need some boiling water. The cool water cooler can be cleaned by adding boiled water to it and letting it drain. You can scrub the taps and crevices with a soft bristled brush. Or, you could use a toothbrush. A water cooler can be cleaned with vinegar or bleach depending on what materials it is made from.

You should consult your product manual if you have a specific brand-specific cleaning question, such as “How to clean a primo cooler?”

Can you take a full water bottle out of a water cooler?

To replace your water bottle, it is best to wait until the bottle is almost empty. If the water bottle is not bottom loaded, it will cause a lot more splashing and make a lot more mess.

You can remove the spout from a water cooler dispenser that is bottom-loaded and pull it out.
